The drive came to us through one of our resellers, so we are not entirely sure of its backstory. However, the damage is irreversible, therefore Data Recovery impossible!
Due to the intensity of the damage, the clean room became contaminated with data immediately after opening the lid. Lots of fine metal dust particles (data) were dispersed, and it became immediately apparent that it had met its maker.
We can only guess how it ended up like this, but usually the drive is inside a device hidden away. For example, a device stored in a cupboard somewhere out of sight, therefore once it starts failing, nobody notices.
A typical example would be a small NAS drive stored out of sight, just left alone to do its thing. So, once it begins failing, it happily destroys itself because nobody has configured it to alert anyone. Then the day comes when someone notices they can no longer access it, and it might be too late.
CCTV DVR’s are another example of such devices that can end up wrecking hard drives like this.
The moral of this story is making sure to configure your devices to alert you for drive problems via email. Or, do not hide your device away, and should it begin making nasty sounds, shut it off immediately. Then seek professional help should you value the data.
Consequently, this drive was unrecoverable, as every surface was like the top one
