Dropped Western Digital Caviar Green

WD Family: Sadle G6
We received a call from a customer who was distressed at the loss of their client’s music files.
Their production computer had been knocked off a desk and onto the floor instantly killing it. Also, killing the hard drive inside it.
This was one of those important jobs that needed emergency data recovery, so was sent in using an urgent courier. Therefore, the pressure was on with this dropped Western Digital Caviar hard disk drive.
Once we had the drive in the lab, it wasn’t immediately clear what the problem was.
That was until we noticed one of the sliders on the head stack assembly was missing. Meaning we have to hunt it down and eject it from its hidey hole or it can cause severe damage.
Thankfully, it was only hiding underneath the top platter but stuck to it like glue as usual.
With a bit of magic, the slider was removed from the affected surface causing no further damage. We felt confident to continue with the recovery by replacing the damaged head stack assembly with a fresh new head stack.
Once this was completed, we had to make some firmware adjustments to the drives operating system (SA). This is to stabilise the drive enough to get a good sector-by-sector image of the drive. Therefore, hoping to get our customer a good result.
To conclude this case study, we got our customer a 100% recovery which we were very pleased with, as was the customer
